Google map is adding more and more new features to make its users feel excited while using Google Map on driving. Few months back the App let users share their location to friends with directions to the location. Google Map already told users the best route to reach a desired location with the amount of traffic. Recently Google has introduced a new feature in Android Google maps which tells you the Best time of the day to travel to your destination. The feature will be useful while planning to travel in advance or to know when the best time to leave is.
Duration of the Journey with Graph
If you search a destination in Google map and request for route, the new feature will display a Graph with duration of the journey at the time of search. The new travel time graph is presently available for US and Britain users and will be rolled out in other countries in near future. This feature seems to be very useful but not sure how much precise the information would be.
“The new feature is only available for Maps users on Android, and it pops up when you input directions,” The Verge reported. “Along with showing you the usual estimated time and distance, a new bar graph will also show an estimate of both how long it would have taken a half hour earlier and how long it will take in the next few hours,” the report added.
How Google map is updating the amount of traffic
If you are wondering how come Google is getting details about traffic on all roads, you will be surprised to understand that Google have installed many traffic sensors with the help of Government Transportation agencies. These sensors detect the size and speed of passing vehicles using Radar, Active Infrared or Laser Radar technology. The detected information’s like size and speed of passing vehicles are passed on to Google Server. Google uses these data to provide real time traffic updates like the amount of traffic in each road and these information are also used to predict the amount of traffic in future.
Google uses crowd sourcing to get the amount of traffic. When a user turns on their Google map app, GPS enabled phone sends the location to Google server. As the car is moving, with GPS enabled mobile, Google calculates how fast the car is moving. Google gets these data from many cars driving on the same road. Using their own algorithm Google calculates the amount of traffic and displays the same in Google map. Perfect predictions from Google Map can be expected as more users use Google map apps. If Google does not get minimum data from users, Grey colour is displayed on the traffic layer.
Many drivers use Waze app to report incidents like accidents, parked cars on the road. As Google has acquired Waze, Google Map uses the human updated live data to make their report more perfect.
